FAQ

Find the answers you're looking for

A few of the questions families often ask. If yours isn't here, please get in touch.

When should I see an IBCLC?

You do not need to wait until breastfeeding becomes difficult to seek support. Some families enquire during pregnancy to prepare for breastfeeding, while others seek help in the early days, weeks or months after their baby arrives.

An IBCLC can support families with a range of breastfeeding concerns, including painful feeding, latch difficulties, concerns about milk supply, unsettled feeding, expressing, returning to work or navigating changes in feeding.

What happens during a breastfeeding consultation?

A consultation begins with understanding you, your baby and your feeding experience. Tania will discuss your concerns, your baby's feeding history and what you would like support with.

Where appropriate, feeding will be observed and Tania will work with you to understand what may be contributing to your concerns. Together, you will explore practical strategies tailored to your situation and goals.

Do I need a referral to see Tania?

No referral is required. Families can contact Launceston Lactation Support directly to arrange an appointment.

Can I see you before my baby is born?

Yes. Many parents find it helpful to learn about breastfeeding before their baby arrives.

The Boob Job: Getting Ready to Breastfeed workshop provides practical information about how breastfeeding works, what to expect in the early days and when to seek support.

Individual antenatal consultations may also be available for families who would like personalised breastfeeding preparation.

Can you help if breastfeeding is painful?

Yes. Pain during breastfeeding is common, but it is not something you simply need to accept.

Tania can help explore factors that may be contributing to discomfort, including positioning, attachment, feeding patterns and other aspects of your breastfeeding experience.

Can you help if my baby is having difficulty latching?

Yes. Difficulty with latch or staying attached is one of the common reasons families seek breastfeeding support.

Tania can assess breastfeeding, discuss strategies to improve comfort and effectiveness, and help identify factors that may be influencing feeding.

Can you help if my baby has a tongue tie or concerns about tongue function?

Some babies experience breastfeeding difficulties where tongue movement or oral function may be contributing factors.

As an IBCLC and Speech Pathologist, Tania can assess oral function, consider how this may be influencing breastfeeding, and provide recommendations to support feeding. Where appropriate, she can provide onward referrals for further assessment or management.

Can you help with concerns about milk supply?

Yes. Concerns about milk supply are common and can have many contributing factors.

Tania can help explore feeding patterns, milk transfer, expressing, breastfeeding management and other factors that may be influencing supply.

Can you help with expressing or pumping?

Yes. Support may include discussing expressing routines, pump use, maintaining milk supply, introducing expressing or preparing for times when you may be separated from your baby.

Do you support combination feeding?

Yes. Families may seek support at different points in their breastfeeding journey, including when introducing expressing, supplements or changes to their feeding approach.

Support is tailored to your individual circumstances and goals.

Do you offer home visits?

Consultations are available by appointment. Please contact Tania to discuss current availability and appointment options.

What if breastfeeding is going well — can I still see you?

Absolutely. Some families seek support for reassurance, education or a better understanding of their baby's feeding patterns.

A consultation is not only for when something is wrong — it can also be an opportunity to ask questions, understand what is normal and feel more informed as you care for your baby.
